Hello, freedom

Out. Free. Home.

Good to say, good to feel. I have learned something new, recently, however. Our conditions, although inhumane and downright hell-ish, are nothing compared to the way people at the FTAA rallies in Miami (Nov. 2003) were treated.

But the story will still be told.

Thanks for everyone's constant support.

Please, please, please, check out the stories/photos running on Tuesday at http://stater.kent.edu. Don't check it out for me or even for yourself - read it for the people in Miami; read it for the people in New York.

These are stories that need to be told. These are things that should never happen again.

Thank you all, especially Stater staff, my family and Pat & Nick. Now let's get the story out.

Thank you all for telling your stories about that awful experience. I'm an activist and was in New York for the march on Sunday, August 29. I managed to avoid arrest, and I thought at the time the police were actually curteous and helpful. It looks like things really change once the police are no loger in view of the major television networks! Thanks again for letting everyone know how awful activists are often treated by the police. I can't help but wonder though if you actually did exactly what they wanted. Your story will scare a lot of people from demonstrating in the future, and I'm sure the police and city officials were hoping that's what many would do. Anyhow, you're all very brave and thanks again.

Peace out,
Sue R.

It may have not come across completely in our stories, but not ALL officers were unprofessional. Some were very nice and friendly. Like any group, some are better than others.

Thank you for your interest in our work,
Nick

Thank you for telling your stories.

I have sat and thought about what you have written. I do not think that what you wrote will prevent others from fighting for the good cause. If anything, it makes me want to become more aware of issues that do need to be stood up for.

I hope that you two don't feel that what you have experienced and written hasn't helped or made a difference. You will reach people that you will never know about.

BETH, I HOPE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GET LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR THE AWFUL WAY YOU WERE TREATED IN NYC AND NOW. THE DKS HAS TAKEN YOU FOR A RIDE AND DUMPED YOU IN THE GUTTER. THEY JUST FIRED YOU FOR THE FREEDOM TO EXPRESS YOUR PERSONAL VIEWS ON YOUR OWN TIME. BETH’S BLOG WAS PERSONAL, AND NOT PART OF YOUR NEWS BLOGS. WHAT'S NEXT? EXECUTION ON THE MEMORIAL FOR TYPOS? THE PUNISHMENT WAS, IN THE LEAST EXTREME. COOMES, IF YOU FEAR BLOGS SO MUCH, WHY ARE THEY LINKED TO THE ONLINE NEWSPAPER? IF YOU DON’T WANT PERSONAL OPINIONS, YOU SHOULDN'T’T HAVE BLOGS POSTING ON THE PAPER’S WEBSITE. YOU SAY ONE THING, BUT DO ANOTHER. YOU CAN’T HAVE A STUDENT POLITICS REPORTER WHO ISN'T’T INTERESTED IN POLITICS. DO YOU WANT A FACELESS, SPINELESS, FLUNKY FOR THE JOB? WOW, WON’T THAT BE INTERESTING. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IF ANYONE WOULD BE OFFENDED BY READING SOMEONE ELSE'S OPINION, UNLESS THAT PERSON HAD AN AXE TO GRIND. HUMM….SOUNDS LIKE AN OLD FASHION HANGING. NO ONE HAS TO READ ANYONE'S BLOG, AND NOW, THANKS TO YOU AND WHATEVER SELF-SERVING IDIOT WANTED BETH IN TROUBLE, MOST KSU JOURNALISM STUDENTS HAVE BLOCKED THEIR BLOGS, OR DESTROYED THEM. NICE WORK KSU, ENCOURAGE STUDENTS NOT TO WRITE, LET THEM BOTTLE IT UP INSIDE THEMSELVES UNTIL IT BLOWS. MAYBE WE CAN HAVE ANOTHER MAY 4TH INSTEAD! COOMES, YOU WERE WRONG ON THIS ONE, GIVE BETH HER JOB BACK AND SAVE YOUR BUTT, THE DAMAGE YOU’VE ALREADY DONE IS UNBELIEVABLE!

sniffle sniffle cry about it. she was skating on thin ice with every biased article she wrote. I am amazed that the Stater had the balls to actually lay the law down for once. ACLU, Legal representation? Overreact much? Its not like she'll have a future in journalism after all the stuff she's posted and written in the past. Well maybe for the communist paper the baret clad extremists pass out occasionally. Good riddence, even though I have a strong feeling that DKS will give in to the 10 of you crying about the said "injustice"

I have never seen a more hateful and ignorant attack on a person in my life than the one above. "Anonymous" writes that Beth Rankin was "skating on thin ice with every biased article she wrote." What exactly do you find so extremely biased? Please explain yourself. Was it her personal account of being arrested and held for an unnecessary amount of time in unhealthy conditions? This is biased? Oh wait, maybe it was her article on the May 4th peace march, in which she stated "March for Peace Remains Peaceful." Yikes that really smacks of bias to me. "Not!"

Get real Mr./Ms. "Anonymous." If you're so sure of your opinions then please be specific in your arguments and have the courage to sign your name. Otherwise your comments are nothing more than a biased attack on a person whose views you obviously disagree with.
